If you are drawn to horror that crawls under your skin through atmosphere rather than jump scares, Otherside Tapes: Favela deserves a spot on your radar. This first-person found-footage experience drops you into the narrow, winding streets of a Brazilian favela, where every corner feels like it could be your last. You play as Cláudio da Silva, an urban explorer chasing the eerie legends surrounding Street 7 — a place tied to unexplained disappearances and a devastating fire. The game leans hard into navigation and survival, pushing you to evade unseen threats rather than fight them. What Makes Otherside Tapes: Favela Tick
Otherside Tapes: Favela is not a shooter, and it does not pretend to be. The core loop revolves around exploration, evasion, and piecing together the story of Street 7. You move through tight alleyways, duck into doorways, and try to stay one step ahead of whatever is lurking in the shadows. The game uses a found-footage presentation — think handheld camera aesthetics and a grainy, immersive visual style — to heighten the sense of realism and vulnerability. Because combat is off the table, your survival depends on reading the environment, remembering routes, and reacting quickly when the familiar suddenly becomes unfamiliar.
The setting itself is a character. The favela's layered architecture, with its stacked homes, exposed wiring, and narrow passages, creates a natural maze that feels both authentic and threatening. Sound design does a lot of the heavy lifting here: distant noises, sudden shifts in ambient audio, and the echo of your own footsteps all contribute to a persistent sense of dread. If you have played titles like P.T. or Outlast, you will recognize the design philosophy — tension built through pacing and atmosphere rather than gore or action.
