About Cardpocalypse

Cardpocalypse is a single-player RPG that mixes collectible card battling with a story-driven campaign set in the 1990s. You play as Jess, a young girl who accidentally gets her favorite card game banned at school. When mutant invaders from that same game start appearing, she has to rally her friends, build powerful decks, and save the world. We tested v2.33 on a standard Windows 10 machine, and the first thing that stood out is how quickly the game pulls you into its retro world — the opening scenes load in seconds, and the card battles are snappy even on integrated graphics.

What makes Cardpocalypse different from most deck-builders is the rule-bending mechanic. After each victory, you can draft new cards and tweak the rules of the game itself. In our playthrough, we found ourselves deliberately changing a rule to give a weaker card a surprise advantage — and that layer of manipulation adds real depth. There is also a roguelike Gauntlet mode where every run throws fresh challenges at you, so the replay value is high. If you enjoy games that reward both deck strategy and narrative choices, this one is worth your time.

Gameplay and Story

The core loop in Cardpocalypse revolves around strategic card battles. You start with a basic deck and gradually add cards by winning matches and making choices. After each victory, you get to draft a new card and optionally modify one of the game's rules — for example, changing how much damage a certain card type deals. In our experience, this makes you think beyond just playing the best card in hand; you're also planning how to reshape the rules for future fights. The story unfolds through conversations with friends and teachers at school, and the writing has a lighthearted, nostalgic tone that fits the 90s setting.

The Gauntlet mode is where the roguelike elements shine. Each run starts you with a fresh deck and a series of escalating battles. You'll encounter random events and rewards, and if you lose, you start over — but with new knowledge of card synergies. We found ourselves replaying runs to test different rule combinations, and the mode adds dozens of hours of potential playtime.
